The total aggregated of all photovoltaic generation installations amounted to 15 GW at the and of 2008, with a large part being due to the European market (GW of aggregated installed power). During 2008 alone, one third of the total photovoltaic power in the world was installed. The Spanish market deserves a special mention, since the number of installations was multiplied by five when compared to 2007, achieving the installation of 2500 MW, almost 50% of the world market.

The big challenge for the industry, in order to continue helping sustainable development, is to maintain the present processes of cost reductions that will allow the generation of electricity in a way that is economically competitive with the rest of technologies.
